Description

Nettles (Urtica sp.) are prevalent throughout most parts of the world. In North America or Europe, the most prolific variety is the species Urtica dioica, which most people refer to as stinging or common nettle. The plant literally stings when touched, causing allergic contact dermatitis - although nettle has a rich ethnobotanical history of being intentionally used in this manner, mostly to treat arthritic conditions (also see the Sauna whisking traditions in Finland). More commonly, the plants are harvested with protective gloves and then dried or cooked, which renders the stingers inert and ready for use as a nutrient rich tea or food. The dormant stalks can also be harvested and used to make relatively strong cordage. These plants thrive in riparian zones and under the dappled shade of forest canopies, where I've seen them reach nearly two meters in height. However, I've also seen them happily thrive on lawns in rainier and colder climates. When we first started them in our farm's Mediterranean climate, there was some skepticism about whether they could actually thrive here. (I'd only seen the much stubbier annual Urtica urens, which is a common farm weed and has a poor, straw-like flavor). However, we've now successfully established two stands under full sun - although note, they do need substantial water to survive extremely hot summers. 120 days from seed to establish a stand with harvest potential. Cooley's Hedge Nettle is an attractive perennial arising 70 to 150 cm high from a rhizome. The stem is erect and usually singular. The leaves are mostly on the square stems, where they are opposite. The leaves are pubescent on both surfaces. The flowers are arranged in a series of whorls, the flowers being on the upper part of the stem. Cooley's Hedge Nettle grows mostly in swamps and moist low ground, but may be found from sea level to nearly 4000 ft in elevation. Cooley's Hedge Nettle is found from the North west Pacific coast east to the eastern base of the Cascade Mountains, from southern British Columbia south to southern Oregon and all of the coastal islands. It is easy to grow and given sufficient watering should thrive almost anywhere. The Nuu-chah-nulth fishermen wiped their hands on this plant before handling their gear to lessen their scent left on it. The Saanich peoples made spring tonic by steeping the crushed rhizomes in boiling water. The Haida used to chew on the young stems. The Green River and Puyallup peoples used the hedge nettle to cure boils. The Quileute used the hedge nettle as a cure for rheumatism. The Quinalt peoples sucked the nectar from the flowers and covered steaming bulbs with hedge nettle plants to aid in the steaming process.
