Description
Blue Pottery is a Turkish-Persian craft dating back to the 16th Century. It was actually an improvisation of the fabled Chinese Porcelain to suit the Persian alkaline soil which when mixed with Copper and heated gave a resplendent turquoise blue hue, often called the Muslim Blue color. It has been used to make glazed tiles to decorate mosques, tombs and palaces in Central Asia. In Persia (Iran today) Blue Pottery is still called by the old name of Sangine meaning 'made out of stone'. This craft reached Jaipur as recently as mid-18th Century during the reign of Sawai Ram Singh II, a patron of crafts, via Kandahar, Multan, Lahore, and Mughal Delhi. However, the secrets of the craft being heavily guarded by the royal family, the skills were confined to a handful of artisans and were at the risk of dying out by the mid-20th Century. It was saved thanks to Maharani Gayatri Devi's patronage by Shri Kripal Sekhawat at the Shipla Kala Kendra. Unemployed youth in and around Neota village were trained with the help of the Birla Foundation. Sadly, we are today witness to a steady decline in the demand for Blue Pottery as cheap factory made goods flood the markets and the value of craft and handmade products is unappreciated. The craft itself is a complicated process, taking decades to master. The pottery mixture is made from mixing ground Quartz stone, Silica glass powder, Sodium Bicarbonate, and Multani mitti bound together by Katira (tragacanthin) a vegetable-based gum, and Wheat flour. Molds are used to prepare the basic shape of the object which is then sun dried. Blue Pottery is the only pottery in the world which DOES NOT use Clay. The colors used for painting the dried objects are stone and mineral based and crushed by hand. The color palette is restricted to metal oxides: cobalt (dark blue), copper (light blue), chrome (green), cadmium (yellow), ferrous (brown). The final step is applying a glaze to preserve the colors.5. Handmade.Global Authentic Blue Pottery White Flower Beautiful Ash Tray Round 4 Inches
