From Dragon Models:A whole series of X-series experimental aircraft were made for the US Air Force (USAF). The first was the Bell X-1, but another one that is equally famous is the North American X-15. The rocket-powered X-15 reached the very edge of outer space, and today it still holds the world record for the fastest speed attained by a manned rocket-powered aircraft. Its fastest recorded speed was Mach 6.72, equating to 7,274km/h. This hypersonic spaceplane was produced by North American Aviation and Reaction Motors, the latter manufacturing the XLR-99 rocket engine. A total of three X-15s were made, and 199 flight tests were conducted from 1959 to 1968. These flights contributed much to American knowledge about aircraft and spacecraft design. For its flight tests, the 15.45m-long X-15 was carried under the wing of a B-52 operated by NASA, and then released at an altitude of nearly 14km.

Development started in 1945, and it was inspired by the shape of a Browning .50-cal machine gun round that was known to be stable in supersonic flight. Inspired by the sleek contours of a .50 caliber bullet, the Bell X-1 (experimental supersonic) was built specifically to probe the regime of supersonic flight. Measuring only 31 feet in length, the X-1 was a single-seat design powered by a four-chambered rocket motor that was fueled by a volatile mixture of alcohol and liquid oxygen. On October 14th 1947 history was achieved when the X-1 accelerated to Mach 1.07. Kit features a fully detailed cockpit with an optional pilot figure, an optional rocket engine, an opening cockpit door and decals with authentic markings for four versions.

Your Bell X-1 is a Level 2 kit - it is perfect for intermediate and advanced model builders. Parental supervision is suggested. Always study the assembly drawings included in the packaging before beginning. Each part is identified by a part number. Trimming to remove extra plastic and filing to smooth before part assembly is suggested. For better paint and decal adhesion, wash the plastic parts in a mild detergent solution. A derivative ordered by the US Air Force (USAF) in 1948 was the Bell X-1A, which was an improved design featuring greater fuel capacity and hence a longer engine-burn time. The X-1A looked slightly different with its bubble canopy and longer fuselage, although it was powered by the same Reaction Motors XLR-11 rocket engine. It was intended for research of aerodynamic properties at speeds surpassing Mach 2. The Bell X-1A (with serial number 48-1384) first exceeded Mach 2 in November 1953, but the following month test pilot Captain Chuck Yeager achieved a speed record of Mach 2.44. Unfortunately, the experimental plane was later lost in an explosion in August 1955.Joining earlier versions of the Bell X-1, Warbirds now has an excellent 1/144 scale model of the X-1A in its collection. After two Bell X-1 craft were destroyed by separate explosions in 1951, X-1E (with serial number 46-063) was reconstructed from X-1-2. Major modifications specific to the X-1E were a turbopump fuel feed system, a super-thin wing and a knife-edge cockpit windscreen. The X-1E performed its maiden flight on 15 December 1955 with test pilot Joe Walker at the controls. By the time the craft completed its 26th and final flight it had attained a top speed of Mach 2.21, which equates to 2,704km/h!Warbirds has added the X-1E to its 1/144 scale range of collectible aircraft.
